Heat pump hot water systems — Mornington Peninsula
Thinking about a heat pump, or need to replace an old hot water system? Be Sure Plumbing is a local, licensed plumber based in Tootgarook, and we can help you work out whether a heat pump suits your home, then install it properly.
What is a heat pump, and how does it work?
A heat pump hot water system is an electric system that works a bit like a fridge in reverse. Instead of heating water directly with an element or a gas burner, it draws heat from the surrounding air and moves it into the water in the tank. A small fan and compressor do the work, so it uses much less electricity than heating the water directly. Some models, like the Rheem system we install, also have an electric booster for cold mornings or heavy use.
Why Victorian homes are switching
Victoria is moving away from gas. Under the Victorian Government's new rules, from 1 March 2027, if a gas hot water system in an existing home breaks and can't be repaired, it will need to be replaced with an electric option, such as a heat pump. Your current gas system can keep going and can still be repaired while it works. The change applies when it reaches the end of its life. Some exemptions apply, so we're happy to look at your situation and explain what applies to your home.
Planning ahead means you're not making a rushed decision on a cold morning with no hot water.
What we install
We supply and install the Rheem heat pump (electric boosted), a reliable option for Peninsula homes. We also work with Rinnai, Thermann, Vulcan, Bosch and Aquamax across other hot water types, so ask us about other heat pump brands and we'll talk you through what suits your space and household.
Our installation process
1. Have a chat: tell us about your current system, your household and where the unit could go.
2. Site check: we look at space, airflow, noise near bedrooms and neighbours, and your power supply.
3. Clear quote: you get a written quote before any work starts.
4. Installation: we remove your old system, install and connect the new one, and test it.
5. Handover: we show you how it works and leave the site tidy.
Heat pump FAQs
Do I have to replace my gas hot water system now?
No. If it's working, you can keep it, and it can still be repaired. The new Victorian rule applies from 1 March 2027 when a gas system breaks and can't be repaired.
Will a heat pump work in a Peninsula winter?
Yes. Heat pumps are made to work in cooler weather, and electric-boosted models like the Rheem have a backup element for very cold days.
Where does a heat pump go?
Usually outside, where there's good airflow and room for maintenance. We'll suggest the best spot during the site check.
Can you service my existing hot water system too?
Yes. We service and repair gas, electric, solar and heat pump systems.
